Investigation determines it's comprised of microbes (the biology is somewhat explained and mostly handwaved). This appears to correlate with the arrival of a band of light of particular wavelength. Grace is teaching children at the time astronomers notice a rapid (decades) decline in solar output. Initially they were weakly presented as returning memories after a period of coma, which was just about ok, if somewhat excessive in terms of details remembered, but very quickly even this pretence was abandoned and they were just chucked in whenever the main plot needed another boost. I also don't like the retrospective insertion of past events. Grace's cocky attitude grated throughout, and although there was plenty of hard science, the fundamental premise of the story was a ridiculous piece of handwavium that never made sense. Didn't enjoy this even as much as the Martian.
